Operation of the OPC field devices and the OPC server eDOS

The OPC field devices provide (depending on the model) the following data points:     

  • digital switching inputs     
  • analogue voltage and current inputs     
  • Voltage sensors (24 V operating voltage / battery)     
  • temperature sensors     
  • counter values

State changes to these data points are time-stamped and transmitted either immediately or as part of a cyclic routine message     

  • ISDN     
  • GSM     
  • GPRS     
  • LAN

transmitted to the OPC server eDOS.

This provides the current status of all data points of all registered field devices with the respective time stamps in a tree-like structure to an OPC client.

The OPC client is integrated into a software that handles the further processing of the data point information, e.g.     

  • graphically (visualization)     
  • Initiates measures within a control center software     
  • Measured values ​​archived

In addition, the OPC server eDOS monitors whether the field devices are cyclically reporting with a routine message (for example once a day).

If required, control center software can use the OPC client at the OPC server to change the state of writeable data points, which can be used, for example. assigned to an output relay on a field device. In this case, the eDOS server establishes a connection to the OPC field device via the corresponding network and transmits a command for switching the respective output.

With an “OPC relay” function, the state of inputs in a field device can also be mapped to correspondingly assigned outputs of another field device.

Production data management

The big challenge in collecting, collecting and distributing data from the production process is the conversion of many different protocols, interfaces and signals. At this point, the Data Station Plus (DSP) serves as a multiprotocol converter, enabling full integration of systems from multiple manufacturers.

The DSP bridges the communication gap between serial, Ethernet and fieldbus devices with more than 300 available drivers and can also record analog and digital values. Up to 15 different protocols can be operated simultaneously. Collected data from the machine level can be prepared and transferred to a higher level by means of an integrated OPC server with SCADA connectivity.

The programming and configuration takes place by means of the license-free and therefore free software Crimson 3.0. The combination of protocol conversion, web and FTP servers, data logging, the remote maintenance function with email and SMS messaging and many other functions in just one device make the Data Station Plus a universal solution for connecting, monitoring and controlling machines and systems and processes.
